A picture book centring on a young girl growing up during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Moved to a re-education camp in the countryside, she finds comfort in the playing of a hidden piano during her internment. Although not autobiographical, it contains realistic themes of Mao-centric propaganda and striking illustrations. It has often been included in other curriculum resources due to its strong emphasis to human rights issues and relationship to Amnesty International.
